Bluffrats

The gold is in the land. That's part of a story Mick told me about how people see the land in the area he lives. It's part of their lives in a very real and tangible way. And that's something I connected with during the two day Prime Collective workshop that was held in Corpus Christi this past week. Here is the short essay that I put together, with the help of the wonderful Melanie Burford and Dominic Bracco II who were my team leaders. Great workshop with some great people. Can't wait to be in south Texas this summer as well.

Phyllis Dinger holds a bird's feather after her daily afternoon walk to a small pond in Flour Bluff, a neighborhood of Corpus Christi, Texas. Dinger is having hip surgery soon.

Rosalinda Canales walks down to watch the birds near a small pond by her house, holding her hands out to imitate a bird as she does. Rosalinda says that this area is the only one where she's found the pink birds, Roseate Spoonbill, whose bills are shaped like spoons. "This is living," she said as she walked away from the pond.

Brothers Ryker and Tre Quaid play in their backyard near the ocean in Flour Bluff as their father Dale watches nearby.

Chad Ansel takes his kite out of the water after kite surfing in the windy marina surround Bluff's Landing.

Fishing guide David Rowsey waits for clients to show up early in the morning on his boat docked at Bluff's Landing Marina. Guides can make up to eight hundred dollars for each trip they take with a client.

Ryan Deleon holds up a white shrimp in the bait shop at Bluff's Landing Marina where he works. He collects sand dollars and dries them around the Marina from these tanks.

Fishing guide C.R. greets clients as they climb aboard his boat.

Jeremiah Earls catches a fish while net casting with his father Michael and brother Joshua.

Eric Cobb reads a book before going to bed in his boat house docked in Bluff's Landing Marina. Originally from Minnesota, Cobb is trying to start a small business in Corpus that would allow him and his family to live there as well. Cobb is an avid windsurfer and says that the average winds in Corpus Christi are great for riding across the bay.

Ryan Deleon feeds extra bait to the birds outside the Bluff's Landing Marina bait shop.

Phyllis Dinger and Rosalinda Canales hug after their afternoon walk together where they both managed to find some interesting bird feathers to take home.

The Quaid family's house.

Mick Linares cuts up the trout he's caught out in the bay near Pita Island. Mick took the fish later that day to the restaurant nearby to cook for lunch.

Chris Thompson watches as fishing guides take off from the marina with their clients early in the morning.

Burt Bradshaw helps push-start a friends car who got stuck in the neighborhood.

Mick Linares catches a trout near Pita Island. He says that oftentimes fishermen will follow his smaller boat to certain areas thinking that the local knows all of the best spots to fish. Mick fixed up the boat he uses after it sunk in the bay nearby after being neglected by its owner.

Eric Cobb turns off the main light in his houseboat after watching some Hulu to unwind.
